Hi folks,
Meats, fruits and vegetables. Sounds simple enough. But usually my hunting and gathering are accompanied with a shopping basket and not a spear. So I wanted to start a discussion about good food and bad food that can be found at the supermarket. Some seem good but need a closer look. After reading numerous labels it is amazing how many grocery items contain one of the following additives:
1- Calcium Ascorbate
2- Sodium Ascorbate
3- Ascorbic Acid
4- Food Acid
5- Citric Acid.
According to Stirling’s research, these 5 items are not good for P sufferers because of the calcium component. SO READ LABELS and report here any interesting findings. For instance, I am eating applesauce. It’s a fruit, right? Sure, but guess what’s added – citric acid for a preservative. Also I was checking a shredded cheddar cheese label. Once again I found a forbidden additive. Calcium Ascorbate was added to prevent caking. All the items in my pantry will be replaced with items NOT containg these additives. If you find a seemingly SAFE food that is contaminated please report it here. To the contrary, if you find a brand or alternative product that is CLEAN please report it here as well. I will be doing the same thing. And hopefully this will help some of us out.

HEY Stirling,
Is "Calcium Sulfate" an additive that would be in the same family as those above. After re-checking that was the ingredient added to the shredded cheese to prevent caking.
I know you probably get tired of answering questions. But I have a few more about the diet. I noticed that you said nothing about sweeteners. Was wondering what your thoughts are on honey, pure maple syrup, and good ol plain sugar. I found some glutten free pancakes at this site:
www.glutenfree.com/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=956037 but I notices they have sugar. Otherwise the ingedients seem to indicate it's GF, NSF, and AF. I love pancakes. What do you think?

I love pancakes too & so far have resorted to making my own, I seem to be OK with rolled oats, (brown) rice flour & tapioca flour and almonds (other seeds or nuts can be used too) no dairy. I combine the nuts & oats in the blender on high until fine. Very well beaten egg(s) give it a lighter texture & a banana gives it flavor, then no sweetner is needed. For syrup I generally chop some fruit up in a small saucepan with a little water & maybe a little bit of honey, stevia or maple syrup.

Thanks Blue opal for your post. I've been experimenting with a recepie for wheat free pancakes. Yours sound very similar to what I have been doing. I will post it in the recepie section. I would still like to know from Stirling what his thoughts are on sweeteners ( honey, maple syrup, etc) I am also trying to get a handle on the acids to avoid. Previously I found Apples sauce with ascorbic acid. i know that's out. But, recently i found some with erythorbic acid. I believe that is a similar compound. Both are used to preserve color. So now these are the two I'm wondering about:
-Calcium Sulfate
-Erythorbic Acid
Just a note. I know it would be best to buy apples and make fresh applesauce. And I know it would be better to buy organic apples. And I know it would be better to grow my own organic apples. The point is that every step equals more time and hard work and money. And I am trying at this point to pick my battles. Which ones are the most important to fight. If I've gone from eating an apple fritter to eating some natural unsweetened apple sauce (with a little erythorbic acid to maintain color) that could be good enough for now maybe.

Hey, Dave, there is really a lot to "wrap one's mind around" here, no doubt about that !
And be sure that your posting as you go along will encourage others to really get into the diet ~ which may for some of us be no easy thing to do !
I've been pretty much on it since long before I found this site, but the information here has helped me to fine tune
Blessings
